Echinacea

Echinacea augustifolia

Part Used & Dosage

Common Names: Narrow-leaved Purple Coneflower, Sampsom Root.

Properties and Uses: Antiseptic, depurative, digestive.   Used as a blood purifier in eczema, acne, boils, metal and chemical poison build-up and cancer, promotes proper digestion, lowers a fever, and dispels flatulence.   When combined with myrrh, it is used externally for typhoid fever.    It is an excellent cleanser for glandular upsets and infections.

 Elder

Sambucus nigra

Common Names: American Elder, Black Elder, common Elder,Elderberry, Rob Elder, Sweet Elder.

Elder has been found in Stone and Bronze Age excavations. Used in many craft, culinary, alternative medicinal, and cosmetic uses.

Properties and Uses: Cathartic, diaphoretic, diuretic, purgative, stimulant.   Root tea is used for a diuretic,
headache, mucous congestion, and will promote labor in childbirth.   The infusion of the leaves and/or flowers, or a decoction of the bark is used as an antiseptic wash for skin ailments, wounds, and inflammations.   The flower tea will stimulate and cause sweating, stop headaches caused by colds and will alleviate rheumatism when taken warm; take cold and it makes an excellent diuretic.   The infusion of the leaf buds is a strong purgative.   The fresh berry juice, steeped to a syrup is a strong purgative, and undiluted it makes a good ointment for burns when mixed with all-vegetable shortening and fresh aloe leaf juice.   A tea made from the dried berries are used for diarrhea and cholera.   Elderberries must be cooked before using to remove poisonous properties.


Elecampane 

Inula helenium

Part Used & Dosage

Common Names: Elfdock, Elfwort, Horse-elder, Horeheal, Scabwort.

Properties and Uses: Anthelmintic, cholagogue, diuretic, expectorant, stimulant, tonic.   The tea is used to still coughing, stimulate digestion, tone the stomach, treat bronchitis, urinary and respiratory tract inflammation, and for menstrual problems.   The oil is used for respiratory and intestinal catarrh,  chronic diarrhea, and whooping cough.   The decoction or tincture is good for getting rid of worms, and used externally as a wash or fomentation for skin ailments like scabies and itches.

Eleuthero Root

Eleutherococcus senticosus

Part Used & Dosage

 

Common Names: Siberian Ginseng, Wu Jia Pi

Used to combat stress in both men and women, arthritis, rheumatism, tumorous cancer, especially tumorous bladder cancer, the most common cancer in men over the age of 50.  Also excellent for impotence.

Ephedra

Ephedra sinica

Part Used & Dosage

Common Names: Ma Huang, Desert Tea.

One of the oldest herbal remedies for congestive allergies, bronchitis and asthma as it opens the air passages and decongests.   It has also been used to boost heart rate, and metabolism.   It has gained popularity as a weight loss product because it raised the bodies temperature, and metabolism, making it a natural fat burner.

 


Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus globulus

Part Used & Dosage

 

Common Names: Blue Gum, Stringy Bark Tree.

Properties and Uses: Antiseptic, deodorant, expectorant, stimulant.   The oil is used for cough drops for lung diseases, colds, sore throat, as a vapor bath for asthma and other respiratory illnesses, added to the bath for an antiseptic, used for pyorrhea, burns, and to prevent infection.   The cold extract is used for indigestion and intermittent fever.   The oil is used externally for purulent wounds and ulcers. 

 


Eucommia Bark 

Eucommia ulmoides

Common Names: Du Zhong

The primary use of this herb in in Asian medicine to regulate blood pressure and reduce hypertension, but also for backache, stiff and sore joints, frequent urination, poor circulation, to prevent miscarriage, and for its tonic effect on the kidneys and liver.

It has been used for centuries in the orient as a longevity herb which is second in consideration only to Ginseng. Du Zhon, a Taoist monk, was reported to be immortal due to using this herb, among others, and Moo San Do Sha, another monk, who lived to be 142 years of age was also said to use this herb contained in a thousand year old formula.   No doubt Eucommia's anti-inflammatory, sexual improvement, ability to enhance vital energies, increase essence, and its hypertensive properties have made this herb a highly guarded, valuable herb to a race who is well known for its longevity. 


Eyebright

Euphrasia officinalis

Part Used & Dosage

 

Properties and Uses: Anti-inflammatory, astringent, tonic.

Used as and infusion or poultice for nasal congestion or catarrh, coughs, hoarseness, earache, and headache associated with colds, bloodshot and sore eyes, and throat irritations.
