The ancient Britons the flowers as a cosmetic, and a Celtic poem recommended the flowers be steeped in goat's milk and taken to increase female beauty. These possess a slight laxative power, and have also been used for inflammation of the eyes, sleeplessness, pleurisy (inflammation of outer lining of the lungs), jaundice and quinsy (streptococcal tonsillitis), and to cool fevers. In modern times Violet has been included in cancer formulas for internal and external use, and is said to allay the pain caused by cancerous growths. |
