Galangal Root

Alpinia galanga

Common Names: Galingale.


Pronounced: [guh-LANG-guhl], this very aromatic root is used to season stews, soups, rice, and curries.   Also used as an expectorant and carminative for sore throat, swellings, eye infections, and rheumatism.


Garlic

Allium sativum

Common Names: Glove Garlic, Poor Man's Treacle.


Properties and Uses: Anthelmintic, antispasmodic, carminative, cholagogue, digestive, diuretic, expectorant, febrifuge.   Used for activating the digestive organs, for chronic stomach and intestinal catarrh, chronic bronchitis, to regulate the liver and gallbladder, to help intestinal infections such as dysentery, cholera, typhoid, paratyphoid fever, putrefaction in the intestines, to lower blood pressure and counteract arteriosclerosis, enhance blood circulation and heart function.   The cold extract (warmed to body temperature) is used as and enema to expel pinworms.   To temper the personal odor of garlic eat fresh parsley, or mix with garlic just before taking.   When garlic is used for hypertension it is said it will lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels and inhibit platelet aggregation, as well as act as an anti-microbial for harmful bacterial, virus, and parasitical invaders.


Gentian Root

Gentiana lutea

Common Names: Bitter root, Bitterwort, Gentian Root, Pale Gentian.


Properties and Uses: appetite enhancer, tonic, cholagogue, febrifuge, refrigerant, and stomachic.

Used as a bitter tonic to improve overall health, and increase the appetite.   It increases digestive enzymes and stimulated bile excretion which increases assimilation of proteins and fats.   Also used for improving digestion, to strengthen the stomach, heartburn, indigestion, catarrhal gastritis, diarrhea, allay nausea and vomiting, to raise the white blood cell count, fainting, and as a wound wash.   This is said to be useful during chemotherapy.


 Ginger

Zingiber officinale

Common Names: African Ginger, Black Ginger, Race Ginger.


Properties and Uses: Adjunvant, appetizer, carminative, diaphoretic, sialagogue, stimulant.   The tea or tincture is used to cleanse the entire body by causing perspiration, add to bath to detox.     It will also promote the menses, eases flatulent colic and is combined with laxative herbs to make them milder and more tasty, it will ease the effects of a cold if taken at the onset.   To soothe a sore throat, chew a piece of the root.   It is said to be a good herb to use to dispel nausea in morning and motion sickness.


Ginkgo

Ginkgo biloba

This plant's many virtues are said to enhance mental abilities and increase concentration, aptitude, memory, and alertness, as well as alleviate depression, especially in Alzheimer's disease because is increases oxygen to the brain and regulates neurotransmitters and helps the brain metabolism.   It is also said to be an immune cell suppressant to help allergies and asthma.   It is also said to help prevent dizziness, hearing loss, tinnitus, impotence, varicose veins, and stroke because it stimulates circulation, and acts as an antioxidant. 

Korean Ginseng

Panax ginseng

Common Names: American Ginseng, Five-Fingers, Five-leafed Ginseng, Redberry.

Properties and Uses: Demulcent, panacea, stimulant, stomachic.   It is used for feverish and inflammatory ailments, hemorrhage, blood diseases, to normalize menstruation, ease childbirth, promote mental and physical vigor, promote the appetite, digestive problems, stimulate the nervous system, stimulate the glandular systems of the body, coughs, colds, respiratory ailments, dissolves tumors, and to build the immune system.

Goldenrod

Solidago virgaurea

Part Used & Dosage

 

 

Common Names: Sweet Goldenrod, Anise-scented Goldenrod, Blue Mountain Tea, Bohea-tea, Common Goldenrod, Wound Weed.

Properties and Uses: Astringent, carminative, diaphoretic, diuretic, stimulant.   The warm tea is used to stimulate the whole body's system and will dispel flatulence.   Its gentle action is welcome for relieving cramps and gas.   A poultice made from the flowers and laid on a wound is used to prevent lock jaw, and reduce swelling and pain of beestings.   The infusion is used for gravel, urinary obstructions, dropsy, and ulceration of the intestines.   It is said to help regenerate and rebuild kidney strength and health after illness.


Goldenseal

Hydrastis canadensis

Common Names: Eye Balm, Eye Root, ground Raspberry, Indian Plant, Jaundice Root, Orangeroot, Tumeric Root, Yellow Puccoon, Yellowroot.

Properties and Uses: Antiperiodic, antiseptic, astringent, diuretic, laxative, tonic.   Used for all catarrhal conditions, as a vaginal douche, antiseptic mouthwash for sore gums and pyorrhea, as a skin wash in all epidermal diseases such as, sores, erysipelas, and ringworm (followed by sprinkling powder on areas), as a natural wide-spectrum antibiotic, to aid the kidneys, an infections of all sorts. It is a slight laxative, and in small doses it is said will alleviate nausea during pregnancy.   Mix with boric acid for a soothing eyewash.

Gotu Kola Herb

Centella asiatica

Part Used & Dosage

Also a brain stimulant which carries nutrients to carries vital nourishment to the brain which rejuvenates neural synapses to help with memory improvement and to encourage brain activity.

 Gravel Root

Eupatorium purpureum

Part Used & Dosage

 

Common Names: Queen of the Meadow, Joe-Pie, Joe-Pye Weed, Trumpet Weed, Purple Bonset, Trumpet-weed, Gravelweed, Hempweed.

Properties and Uses:  Diuretic, astringent, tonic, and nervine used for diarrhea, diuretic, stimulant, dropsy, gravel, hematuria, gout and rheumatism.   It exerts special influence upon chronic renal and cystic troubles.   It is said to prevent formation of kidney stones and allows a free elimination of uric acid crystals, and also helps a sluggish prostate and cystitis with a mucus discharge. 


Grindelia 

Grindelia squarrosa

Part Used & Dosage

 

 

Properties and Uses: Tonic, Stimulant, Expectorant, Diuretic, Astringent.

This is said to have a tonic effect on the lungs and kidneys, and is a stimulant expectorant to extricate obstinate mucus in the bronchial tubes and lungs.   It is said to be able to dilate bronchioles and thus relieve chest congestion.   Used externally as a lotion for poison ivy and skin rashes which is said to cool, soothe, and stop itching


Guarana Seed

Paullinia cupan

Part Used & Dosage

 

This is often drank as a tea which contains three times as much caffeine as coffee.   The Indians of the Amazon used this for thousands of years as currency in the Bolivian area.   It increases circulatory and neural tone which it has been used for chronic diseases and convalescence.   It is said to be a mood elevator, and aphrodisiac. This is said to be the least likely caffeine plant to cause anxiety.
