Lady's Mantle Herb

Alchemilla xanthochlora 

Part Used & Dosage

Properties and Uses: Astringent, febrifuge, tonic.   Used to increase the appetite, rheumatism, stomach problems, diarrhea, enteritis, menstrual ailments, to coagulate the blood, and stay internal bleeding, as a mouthwash after having teeth pulled, as a douche for leucorrhea, and a wash or poultice for wounds.


Lavender

Lavandula angustfolia

The herbalist Parkinson had this to say about Lavender:

"Of Sage and of Lavender, both the purple and the reare white (there is a kinde herof that beareth white flowers and somewhat broader leaves, but it is very rare and seene but in few places with us, because it is more tender and will not so well endure our cold Winters)."

He also said, "This is usually put among other hot herbs, either into bathes, ointment or other things that are used for cold causes.   The seed also is much used for worms."

Properties and Uses: antispasmodic, carminative, cholagogue, diuretic, sedative, stimulant, stomachic, tonic.   Used for flatulence, migraine headache, fainting, dizziness, to kill putrefactive intestinal bacteria, stomach problems such as nausea and vomiting.   Said to be an excellent, soothing ingredient in children's cough syrups. 


Leeks

Allium ampeloprasum

Part Used & Dosage

Properties and Uses: Used the same as garlic, but is weaker.   It is used to stimulate the appetite, relieve congestion in the respiratory system, as a diuretic, and externally for the insect bites and stings.


 Lemon Balm

Melissa officinalis

Part Used & Dosage

 

This is a neural relaxer which lowers stress and is said to elevate the mood in depression.   An antispasmodic which blocks nerve impulses and sedates the nerves.   It has also been use for its anti-viral properties in herpes in which it shortens the outbreak and reduces the pain from the spell.


Lemon

Citrus limon

Part Used & Dosage

Lemon is said to be a cooling drink in fevers, and to allay thirst, used in diaphoretic and diuretic draughts, rheumatism, and sometimes given to counteract narcotic poisons.   It is said to be a good substitute for quinine in malarial conditions, or for reducing fever in typhoid.


Lemon Verbena Leaf

Alysia triphylla

Part Used & Dosage

Common Names: Herb Louisa.

Properties and Uses: Febrifuge, sedative used as a stomachic and antispasmodic in dyspepsia, indigestion and flatulence.   It is said to stimulate the stomach and the skin for cosmetic purposes to naturally nourish the skin to help reduce wrinkles.


Licorice Root

Glycyrrhiza glabra 

Part Used & Dosage

 

 

Common Names: Licorice Root, Sweet Licorice, Sweet Wood.

Properties and Uses: Demulcent, diuretic, expectorant, laxative.   Used for bronchial ailments, coughs, hoarseness, mucous congestion, stomach ailments, peptic ulcers, bladder and kidney problems, constipation, fever, and to make other medicines easier to take.  Has a soothing effect on gastric mucosa for duodenal and peptic ulcers.   It has also come into use in the last decade especially in estrogen replacement therapies, and is said to strengthen the adrenal gland system after exhaustive conditions depletes that system.


Life Everlasting Flowers

Helichrysum stoechas

Part Used & Dosage

Common Names: Cat's Ear, Cudweed, Catsfoot, American Everlasting. 

Said to be used for its astringent properties, as a cure for quinsy, and mumps, the bites of poisonous reptiles, and for loose bowels.


Linden

Tilia europaea

Part Used & Dosage

 

 

 

Properties and Uses: The flowers are antispasmodic, diaphoretic, diuretic.   The bark is cholagogue, emollient.   The infusion of the flowers is used for colds, sore throat, the flu, bladder and kidney problems, as a mouthwash and gargle for sore mouth and throat, to apply to wounds, sores, pimples, blemishes, and skin ailments.   The charcoal, made by burning the wood is used for halitosis, spasmodic cough, fever, and night sweats.   This herb should not be taken more than 10 days in the same 3 month period as it can cause heart damage. 


 Lobelia Herb

Lobelia inflata

Part Used & Dosage

Common Names: Bladderpod, Emetic Herb, Emetic Weed, Gagroot, Indian Tobacco, Vomitroot, Vomitwort, Wild Tobacco.

Properties and Uses: Antispasmodic, diaphoretic, diuretic, emetic, expectorant, nervine.   Used for asthma, whooping cough, to induce vomiting, as a poultice for bruises, insect bites, felons, ringworm, sprains, erysipelas, poison ivy and poison oak.   See 'Cautions' on this herb.


Lomatium Root

Lomatium dissectum

Part Used & Dosage

 

Lomatium's antiviral properties make it useful for long-standing respiratory infections, sore throat, and congestion.   It can cause a self-limiting skin rash as it encourages the skin pores to open and release body toxins causing illness.   It is said a bath in Epsom salts and baking soda will help the rash, as well as help the skin excrete the toxins. 


Lovage Root

Levisticum officinale

Part Used & Dosage

 

 

Common Names: European Lovage, Lavose, Sea Parsley.

The celery-like flavor has been used to flavor teas, vinegars, poultry, meat, fish, egg dishes, chowders, sauces, and vegetables.

Properties and Uses: Carminative, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, stimulant, stomachic.   Used for getting rid of excess water in the body, urinary problems, digestive problems, gastric catarrh, flatulence, skin problems, to promote the onset of the menses.   This herb should not be used by pregnant women or for long periods of time as it can cause kidney problems.


Lungwort Leaf

Pulmonaria officianalis

Part Used & Dosage

Common Names: Jerusalem Cowslip, Jerusalem Sage, Maple Lungwort, Spotted Comfrey, Spotted Lungwort.

Properties and Uses: Astringent, demulcent, emollient, expectorant.   Used for diarrhea, hemorrhoids, coughs, hoarseness, respiratory ailments, other lung problems, and as a wash for wounds.

 


Lycii Berries

Lycium barbarum

Part Used & Dosage

Common Names: Gou Qi Zi

A nutrient tonic highly valued in Chinese medicine used in diabetes, and pulmonary tuberculosis.
