Radish 
Raphanus sativus

Common Names: Common Radish, Garden Radish.

Properties and Other Uses: Antispasmodic, astringent, cholagogue, diuretic.   The juice is used for coughs, rheumatism, and taken for three weeks to cure gallbladder problems.   It is also used for chronic bronchitis, flatulence, diarrhea, headache, and insomnia.

 


Raspberry, Red
Rubus idaeus

Common Names: Wild Red Raspberry.


Properties and Uses: Antiemetic, astringent, laxative.   Used for diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, to prevent miscarriage, increase milk flow, reduce labor pains.   Also used as a tonic for the uterus to curb excess menses bleeding and during pregnancy to prevent spotting.   It also helps reduce postpartum bleeding.   The fresh berries are a mild laxative.


Red Clover 
Trifolium pratense

Common Names: Trefoil, Purple Clover.

Properties and Uses: An alterative and antispasmodic.   Has a mild sedative effect to calm nerves which is said good for child use.    Used in cases of bronchial asthma and whooping-cough.    Fomentations and poultices of the herb have been used as local applications to cancerous growths, and internally for cancer also.


Rehmannia 
Rehmania glutinosa

 

 

Common Names: Ti huang

Properties and Uses: anti-inflammatory, tonic, adrenal gland tonic, alterative, antiasthma

Rehmannia is said to reduce adrenal fatigue, aid rheumatoid arthritis, ease the effects of asthma, eczema, chronic inflammation, and other auto immune diseases by boosting the immune system.


Reshi Mushroom
Ganoderma lucidum

Is said to protect and enhance the immune system, moderate blood sugar, protect against cancer, improve cardio-vascular functions, reduce cholesterol, and reduce stress.


Rhubarb Root
Rheum officinalis/palmatum

 

Common Names: Indian Rhubarb, Turkey Rhubarb

A slight laxative which helps to detoxify the liver and cleanse the bowels.   It is said to be used also for ailments of the gallbladder, spleen, eliminate ulcers, hemorrhoids, and candida from the intestines.


Rooibos Tea
Aspalathus linearis

 

 

 

 

Rooibos Tea has a pleasantly mild taste which is naturally sweet, caffeine free, and can be served hot or cold, and contains a natural source of floride, calcium, vitamin C, iron, magnesium, potassium, copper, maganese, a natural anti-oxidant SOD (Super Oxide Dismutase) which protects the body against free radicals, and zinc.

It is said to have healing properties which will alleviate allergies, is an anti-spasmodic for digestive upsets in both adults and children, is a natural relaxant, and has anti-aging properties for a healthier life-style. 


Rose
Rosa centifolia

 

 

 

 

This is a sweet-scented rose with a soft floral aroma remaining after drying which is used in herbal craft projects and potpourri. Commonly used in rosewater and perfumery, and French liqueurs.

Properties and Uses: Aperient, astringent, stomachic.   Used for headache, dizziness, to strengthen the heart, as a nerve tonic, blood purifier, mouth sores, relieve exhaustion, ease uterine cramps, mouthwash, toothache, earache, sore throat, hemorrhage, dry rough skin, chapping, regulate the menstrual cycle, insomnia, colic, vaginal douche, frequent or excessive involuntary release of semen.


Rosemary
Rosmarinus officinalis

Properties and Uses: Antispasmodic, cholagogue, emmenagogue, stimulant, stomachic.   Used to increase bile, good digestion, raise blood pressure, improve circulation.    Used for rheumatism, eczema, scrofulous sores, bruises, wounds.   The infusion, mixed with borax is used for the scalp to prevent baldness.   The tea is used for halitosis.

 


Rue
Ruta graveolens

 

 

Common Names: Common Rue, Garden Rue, German Rue, Herb-of-Grace.

Properties and Uses: Anthelmintic, carminative, emmenagogue, stimulant, stomachic.   Used for gout, rheumatism, nervous heart conditions, menopausal palpitations, eliminate worms, gas pains, colic, improve the appetite and digestion, to promote the onset of the menses.   It will remove head lice, combined with Parsley Seeds, (use infusion; wash hair once daily, afterwards rub in infusion thoroughly, let dry on hair and remain until next day's shampoo, repeat for 12 days and vermin will be gone).
