Calamus Root 

Acorus calamus

 

 

Common Names: Sweet Flag, Sweet Root, Sweet Rush, Sweet Cane, Claddon, Sweet Myrtle, Myrtle Grass, Myrtle Sedge, Cinnamon Sedge.

Formerly much esteemed as an aromatic stimulant and mild tonic, it also acts as a carminative, removing the discomfort caused by flatulence and checking the growth of bacteria which gives rise to flatulence.   The dried root has been chewed to relieve dyspepsia, and clear the voice.   It has also been used in times past in all nervous complaints, vertigoes, headaches, dysenterychronic catarrhs, as a vermifuge and insecticide for fleas and white ants which plague trees.   It is also used as a fixative in potpourri which also lends it aroma and texture to mixes.


Calendula Flower

Calendula officinalis

 

 

Common Names: Garden Marigold, Holigold, Marigold, Mary Bud, Pot Marigold.

Properties and Uses: Antispasmodic, aperient, cholagogue, diaphoretic, vulnerary.   Use the infusion for gastro-intestinal conditions such as, ulcers, cramps, colitis, and diarrhea.   The infusion is also good internally for fever, boils, abscesses, and to stop recurrent vomiting.   The fresh juice from the herb and flowers is a substitute for an infusion.   Use externally, made into a salve for wounds, bruises, sprains, pulled muscles, sores, varicose veins, and boils.   The fresh juice is used to get rid of warts.   The tincture is used internally for gastritis and menstrual problems.


Caraway Seed

Carum carvi

Properties and Uses: Antispasmodic, appetizer, carminative, emmenagogue, expectorant, galactagogue, stomachic.   Benefits the appetite and digestion, promotes the onset of menstruation, eases uterine cramping, promotes the secretion of milk in lactating mothers, is a mild expectorant.   Eases flatulent colic in infants, and settles the stomach after taking nauseous medicines.   This is an excellent herb for a nursing mother to use when baby is colicky because just the right amount of herb is passed on to baby through mother's milk to mildly medicate baby, giving both relief! 


Cardamom
Elettaria cardamomum
 

Properties and Uses: Appetizer, carminative, stimulant, stomachic.   Used for flatulence with other herbs in a formula, or used to flavor other medicines. 


 Carrot

Daucus carota

 

Common Names: Beesnest Plant, Bird's-nest Root, Queen Anne's Lace.

Properties and Uses: Anthelmintic, carminative, diuretic, stimulant.   The soup is effective for diarrhea and is easily digested when suffering from stomach and intestinal problems.   It prevents putrefaction in the intestines.   Eating 2-3 raw, ground carrots a day for 5 days will eliminate roundworms.   The juice is good for stomach acidity and heartburn, and the eyes.   The infusion or decoction of the seeds of the wild carrot is used for flatulence, water retention, and to promote the onset of the menses. 


Cascara Sagrada

Rhamnus purshiana

Common Names: Sacred Bark, Buckthorn, Chittembark.

Used as a mild laxative which acts on the large intestine.   It also acts as a stomachic tonic and bitter which promotes gastric digestion and appetite.

 

 


Catnip

Nepeta cataria

Common Names: Catmint, Catnep, Catrup, Catswort, Field Balm.

Properties and Uses: Anodyne, antispasmodic, aromatic, carminative, diaphoretic.   The tea is used for upset stomach, colic, spasms, flatulence, excess stomach acid, enemas, chronic bronchitis, and diarrhea

 


Cat's Claw Bark 

Uncaria tomentosa

This is an anti-inflammatory which has been used for Crohn's disease, leukemia, cancers, herpes, and AIDS to support the body's natural defense system.   It has the ability to build the immune system and boost the white blood cell count and to encourage them to engulf and digest foreign microorganisms invading the body.


Celery 

Apium graveolens

 

 

 

 

 

Common Names: Garden Celery, Wild Celery.


Properties and Uses: The plant is - appetizer, diuretic, emmenagogue.   The seeds are carminative, sedative.   The juice of the plant is the most effective part of the whole plant. It is used for dropsy, rheumatism, gout, obesity, flatulence, chronic pulmonary catarrh,  and diseases caused by deficiency.   Not to be used with chronic kidney problems. It promotes the onset of menstruation.   Pregnant women should only take moderate amounts.   The tea helps to clear up skin problems.   The decoction of the seeds is used for bronchitis, and a sedative for the nerves.   The oil extract is used to restores sexual potency after an illness.


Centaury Herb

Centaurea erythraea


Aromatic, bitter, stomachic, and tonic used because it acts on the liver and kidneys to purify the blood.   Used extensively in dyspepsia, for languid digestion with heartburn after food, dimness of the eyes, and for muscular rheumatism.   It is also used in cosmetic creams to remove freckles, spots, and marks. 

 

 


Chamomile Flowers, German

Matricaria chamomilla

 

 

 

Properties and Uses: Anodyne, antiphlogistic, antispasmodic, calmative, carminative, diaphoretic, tonic.   Good for a wide variety of nervous conditions, insomniarheumatism, rashes, reduces inflammation and facilitates bowel movement without being a purgative.   Use as a wash or compress for skin ailments and inflammations, safe to use for inflammations of the mucous tissues.   Relieves toothache when held in the mouth for awhile.   Use in vaporizer or bath for asthma and to relieve the symptoms of the flu or cold.   In the bath is will also relax, soothe tired aching muscles and prevent cramping.   Use as a sitz bath for hemorrhoids, hands, or aching feet.   The salve is used for hemorrhoids also.


Chamomile Flowers, Roman

Chamaemelum nobile

Properties and Uses: Anodyne, antispasmodic, aromatic, bitter tonic, stimulant stomachic.   The tea is good for flatulent colic, dyspepsia, fever, restlessness in children, a wash for open sores and wounds.   The oil can be used internally for colic, spasms, and stomach cramps.   The oil is also used for swellings, calluses, and painful joints.


 Chervil Leaf

Anthriscus cerefolium

Properties and Uses: Digestive, diuretic, expectorant, stimulant.   The juice is used for scrofula, eczema, gout stones, abscesses, dropsy, and female abdominal problems.   The infusion is used to lower blood pressure.

 



Chestnut Leaf

Castanea sativa

In some places the leaves are used as a remedy for fever and ague, and for their tonic and astringent properties.   Used in paroxysmal and convulsive coughs such as whooping cough, and other irritable and excitable conditions of the respiratory system.


Chickweed

Stellaria media

 

Common Names: Adder's Mouth, Indian Chickweed, Satin Flower, Starwort, Stitchwort, Tongue-grass, Winterweed.

Properties and Uses: Carminative, demulcent, expectorant, laxative.   The decoction is used for serious constipation, coughshoarseness, and heat in the liver.   The fresh crushed leaves, or an ointment made with all-vegetable shortening is good for bruises, irritations, carbuncles, external abscesses, swellings, hemorrhoids, and itching.   It is also used for obesity.


Chicory

Cichorium intybus

Properties and Uses: Appetizer, cholagogue, digestive, diuretic, tonic.   Used for jaundice, spleen problems, to promote the production of bile, the release of gallstones, and eliminate excessive internal mucous, gastritis, lack of appetite, digestive difficulties, glandular organs of the digestive system, and for applying externally to painful inflammations. 

 


Chili Peppers

Cayenne

Capsicum annuum

 

Common Names: Cayenne, Africa Pepper, American Pepper, Bird Pepper, Capsicum, Chili Pepper, cockspur Pepper, Goat's Pepper, Pod Pepper, Red Pepper, Spanish Pepper, Zanzibar Pepper.

Properties and Uses: Appetizer, digestive, irritant, sialagogue, stimulant, tonic.   Uses as a general stimulant and to build up resistance in the immune system.   The infusion is used for stomach and bowel pains and cramps. It stimulates the appetite.   Externally it is used for plasters, liniment or tincture to increase blood flow where rheumatism, or arthritis.     Cayenne is an excellent anti-depressant. 


Chives

Allium schoenoprasum

Properties and Uses: Appetizer, digestive.   Helps to stimulate the appetite, promote digestion, and is useful for anemia.

 

 

 


Cinnamon

Cinnamomum cassia

 A carminative, astringent, stimulant, and antiseptic used to stop vomiting, relieve flatulence, and when given with chalk and astringents it has been used for diarrhea and hemorrhage of the womb.


Clary Sage

Salvia sclarea

 

 

Antispasmodic, balsamic, carminative, tonic, aromatic, aperitive, astringent, and pectoral.   Used for disorders of the digestion, as a stomachic, and in kidney diseases.   Has been used as a salve for inflammation and boils before they rupture.   The powdered leaves have been snuffed to relieve headache.   The infusion has been used to cleanse and cool ulcers, inflammation of the eyes, and the stings of scorpions.   This also makes an excellent addition to bath herbs.


Cleavers

Galium aparine

 

Common Names: Clivers, Goosegrass, Barweed, Hedgeheriff, Hayriffe, Eriffe, Grip Grass, Hayruff, Catchweed, Scratweed, Mutton Chops, Robin-run-in-the-Grass, Loveman, Goosebill, Everlasting Friendship.

Properties and Uses: Diuretic, tonic, alterative, aperient used as a purifier of the blood, for scurvy, scrofula, psoriasis, and skin diseases and eruptions generally.   It has also been used as a solvent in bladder and kidney stones, and is soothing in insomnia because it induces quiet, restful sleep.   Increases urinary secretions powerfully and care should be taken if one has diabetic tendencies.


 Clover

Trifolium pratense

Common Names: Trefoil, Purple Clover.

Properties and Uses: An alterative and antispasmodic. Infusion is used in cases of bronchial asthma and whooping-cough.  Fomentations and poultices of the herb have been used as local applications to cancerous growths.

 


Cloves

Syzygium aromaticum

Properties and Uses: Anodyne, anti emetic, antiseptic.   The oil will stop a toothache when dropped into a cavity, or stop vomiting.   The tea will ease nausea.   This is said to be and aphrodisiac.

 

 

 


Codonopsis Root

Codonopsis pilosula

Common Names: Stone Root; Knob Root; Heal-all

Has been used to dissolve urinary stone and gravel

 


Coltsfoot Leaf

Tussilago farfara

Common Names: British Tobacco, Bullsfoot, Butterbur, Coughwort, Flower Velure, Foal's-foot, Horsefoot, Horsehoof.

Properties and Uses: Astringent, demulcent, emollient, expectorant.   Used for coughs, colds, hoarseness, bronchitis, bronchial asthma, pleurisy, and throat catarrh.   The decoction made from the crushed leaves are good for insect bites, inflammations, general swellings, burnsleg ulcers, and phlebitis.


Comfrey

Symphytum offinale

 

 

 

 

Common Names: Blackwort, Bruisewort, Gum Plant, Healing Herb, Knitback, Salsify, Slippery Root, Wallwort.

Properties and Uses: Anodyne, astringent, demulcent, emollient, expectorant, homeostatic, refrigerant, vulnerary.   The decoction of the rootstock is used for a gargle and mouthwash for throat inflammations, hoarseness, and bleeding gums, digestive and stomach problems, intestinal difficulties, excessive menstrual flow, and to stop spitting blood.   The powdered rootstock is use internally for bloody urine (hematuria), leucorrhea, diarrhea, gastro-intestinal ulcers, dysentery, and irritating coughs.   Externally, the powder is used for a poultice for wounds, bruises, sores, and insect bites.   A poultice made from the hot pulp of the rootstock is great for pulled tendons.   The powdered rootstock revitalizes the skin when added to the bath or made into lotions.


Coptis Rhizome

Coptis chinensis

 

Common Names: Huang Lian

Used for diarrhea, dysentery, to stop vomiting, high fever, irritability, faintness, delirium, burning stomach, and toothache.

 


Coriander

Coriandrum sativum

Properties and Uses: Antispasmodic, appetizer, aromatic, carminative, stomachic.   Used for windy colic internally, and externally for rheumatism and painful joints.   It improves the flavor of other medicinal preparations and corrects the gripping of purgatives.


Cornflowers

Centaurea cysanus 

Common Names: Bachelor's Buttons, Bluebonnet, Bluebottle, Blue Centaury, Cyani.

Properties and Uses: Diuretic, tonic. Used for dyspepsia.   Also mixed with teas recommended for cosmetic purposes, and as an eyewash or eye drops for eye irritations.

 

 


Cornsilk

Zea mays

Properties and Uses: mild stimulant, diuretic, demulcent used in acute and chronic cystitis and bladder irritation of uric acid and phospatic gravel.   It has also been used in gonorrhea as its action is akin to Holy Thistle.


Couchgrass

Elytrigia repens

Common Names: Triticum, Dog Grass, Twitchgrass, Witch Grass.

Properties and Uses: Diuretic used for cystitis, urethritis, hypertrophy of the prostate gland and/or its enlargement, and inflammation of the urinary tract, including cystitis.

 


Cramp Bark

Viburnum opuis

 

Common Names: Guelder Rose, Snowball Tree, King's Crown, High Cranberry, Red Elder, Rose Elder, Water Elder, May Rose, Silver Bells.

Used as a nerve sedative and anti-spasmodic in asthma and hysteria.   Also used in cramps and spasms of all kinds, and convulsions, lock-jaw, heart disease and palpitation, and rheumatism.   This is said to be used during the last few weeks of pregnancy in combination with Partridge Berry to facilitate and easier childbirth

 


 Cranberry

Vaccinium macrocarpon

Cranberry is commonly used in urinary tract and kidney infections and stones, and to prevent reoccurring urinary tract infections due to its flavanoid properties which inhibit harmful bacteria in its never-ending quest of attaching itself to the lining of the bladder.

 


Cubeb Berries

Piper cubeba

Common Names: Java Pepper, Tailed Cubebs, Tailed Pepper.

Properties and Uses: Antiseptic, carminative, diuretic, expectorant, stimulant, stomachic.   Used for indigestion, catarrh, bronchitis, coughs, and lung problems.   The oil is used for urinary ailments and gonorrhea.


 Cumin

Cuminum cyminum

Properties and Uses: Stimulant, antispasmodic, carminative used mostly in herbal animal alternatives for flatulency of languid digestion, colic, and dyspeptic headache.   Applied externally in the form of a plaster for muscle spasms, and soreness, and as a liniment for the same purpose.
